COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS REVISITED

R. Hendro Prasetianto

Abstract

This paper describes  the features of Communicative English as used in literary and scientific communication. CE in terms of phonological, lexical, grammatical contrasts is beyond descriptive and explanatory adequacy. Survey on students’ competence on CE in terms of literary and scientific texts prove that mastery of conventional CE does not support their competence in the field of updated CE. On the whole, 66% of the students failed to understand UCE. Specifically, 12%, 62%, and 38% of the students failed to grasp codes, entailment, and ellipsis respectively. Based upon the findings I propose a draft for designing CE materials in classroom context.
